Newcastle United sets bids deadline- 6 Oct 2008 00:00:00

Prospective bids for trouble-hit Newcastle United must be received by Tuesday 7th October the according to media speculation.

Owner Mike Ashley is believed to want between £250m and £300m for the club and it is thought that there are around 8 potential investors interested in taking over Newcastle.

However, Ashley, who is in need of a quick sale, has informed bidders that they must give a clear indication if they want to buy the club by this week’s deadline.

Businessmen from America, the Far and Middle East make up the group of interested parties linked with a bid.

It is understood that the takeover could be completed by the middle of November should serious buyers emerge this week.

Ashley put the club up for sale in the wake of the sudden departure of former manager Kevin Keegan, but has insisted he will hold out for the right price.

A four-page 'teaser' document has been handed to interested parties, who have been asked to sign a confidentiality clause, outlining what is involved in buying the club.

Three South African businessmen linked with a possible £300m takeover denied they had any intention to buy the club, with billionaire Johann Rupert saying he had ‘absolutely no interest and no knowledge’.
